Rabbit

Acrylic Painting

Brushes Used : Jackson's Akoya Synthetic Flat no. 4 & 2

Paints Used : Liquitex Soft Body Acrylics - Titanium White, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Ultramarine Blue (UMB)

1. I start by blocking in the darks of the eyes using UMB and cadmium red. Highlights on the eyes are created using UMB and white, and then pure white for the lightest highlights.

2. The nose is a mixture of white and red, and the colour around the eyes, nose, and mouth is mostly white with a hint of red and UMB. There is less white and more UMB on the side not receiving the light (right side from the viewer’s perspective).

3. I mix the brown of the fur using cadmium yellow, red, UMB, and white. I'm using very intentional brushstrokes and always aware of the direction of the fur and the form of the head and body.

4. I place lighter and darker marks to indicate the form of the face and the parts of the rabbit that are receiving more sunlight. In this instance, the light is coming from left to right (from the viewer’s point of view). The majority of the marks I make have a sharp edge—that is just my particular style and the look I'm going for.

5. The colour of the ears is created using white, red, and yellow—more yellow than red so that it leans toward an orange hue. Within the ears, I create areas of dark and light—more red and UMB for the darker areas, and more white, yellow, and red for the lighter areas.

6. The background is blocked in using emerald green and a touch of red to knock back the vibrancy of the green.

7. And there you have it—my painting of a rabbit. The paints I use are Liquitex Soft Body Acrylics. I enjoy the texture of these paints; they glide across the surface very easily, which suits my style of painting.

8. I hope you enjoyed seeing my process. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out.
